Taking Compost to the Next Level
My family has been composting a long time. We’ve kept thousands of pounds of compostable materials out of the landfill. The two compost bins in the foreground started life as plastic garbage cans back in 1983. My husband modified them and they are still giving us good service here in 2020. Just waiting to be refilled.
I recently got some advice on composting from Harry Sanchez.
Harry’s an organic gardener and a compost expert extraordinaire. If you go to the Gainesville Farmers Market on Wednesday you’ve seen Harry and his herbs, et al. Following is a link to his Facebook page. Click here.
Harry said to finish my compost I should spread it out on a tarp and cover it up for a month. Well, why not? Most of my compost ends up as potting soil but I put some in my vegetable garden and in flower beds. It’s very thick and wet. Harry says this next step will make it more usable. I will still add coconut coir and oak leaves to it to make it more friable.
After spreading it out, I folded the tarp back over itself and secured the edges with bricks. Now I wait for a month to see the finished product. Oh, the joys of gardening.
